Volver/Return

“VOLVER/RETURN” is the story of one family’s immigration, inspired by the life and experiences of the director’s family when his mother and grandmother immigrated to the U.S. from Uruguay. A timely story of immigration that continues to speak to the immigration issues of today and incorporates Latin music and dance with the storytelling.

The first draft of this new play was written via zoom meetings with our two playwrights, one located in Montevideo, Uruguay, the other in New Jersey, with the producer and the director/choreographer in Northern Virginia. A weeklong workshop and a first read for invited guests took place May, 2022, at George Mason University. QuinTango was the music consultant and accompanied the reading with violin, guitar and bandoneon.

Continuing MetroStage’s commitment to diversity in all aspects of its production and mission, the majority of creative team, cast members and tech many were Latino and were students or recent graduates of GMU. This project was partially funded by the Virginia Commission and Alexandria Commission for the Arts and will be further developed and produced as a MetroStage mainstage production in the future.
