Conceived by Linda Harris & David B. Cole

February 27th, 2023, 7pm at The Lyceum
Music and singing played a critical role in inspiring, mobilizing and giving voice to the civil rights movement. Join us in honoring the ancestors during Black History Month. Let us not forget the movement and messages that changed minds and shaped a nation, sounds that traveled across the oceans, through the fields, down the paths, in the cities, and became a vital part of our culture. From Harriet Tubman’s thirteen missions rescuing over 70 slaves and her work as an armed scout during the Civil War to civil rights activist Gloria Richardson, recognized as leader of the Cambridge movement in nearby Cambridge MD. Experience the blues, the spirituals that changed history and evolved a people. Also included are the iconic songs of Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, whose songs contributed to the movement along with the code songs and Negro spirituals. Includes "Stormy Weather" “Strange Fruit” “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around” "God Bless the Child" "This Little Light of Mine" "RESPECT" and “I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free”.
Performed by Linda Harris, vocalist and narrator; Peter Frassrand, piano; David B. Cole, guitar; Greg Holloway, percussion; Emory Diggs, bass.
Linda Harris is Director of Events and Programs at the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center in Cambridge, MD.
